Are you tired of the daily grind, where Monday feels like a marathon and Friday, a sprint to the weekend? I’ve been there and decided long ago that there’s more to life than just punching a clock. It’s been three decades since I ditched the traditional 9-to-5, and let me tell you, it’s been one heck of a ride.
Today, I’m excited to share my journey—from cubicle escapee to captain of my own ship. So, grab a seat and join me as we explore why taking the leap might just be the best decision you make.

Please know that I am not here to talk about “get quick schemes” or “fast money.” Rather, I am here to share with you a small layer of me as a businessperson who, at age 25, decided I never wanted to work for someone else again. And thankfully, I have been blessed with being able to be my boss since then. There have been ups, there have been downs, but at the end of the day… it was all because of me. And that I find invigorating.
Before I turned 25…
I had more jobs than the number of my age. True story. My first job was working on the Captain Bill fishing boat out of Lewes, Delaware, at age 13. Between then and turning 25, I had exactly 47 jobs. Some summer gigs between grades. Some awful. Some amazing. Most, a pain in the ass because I had to answer to someone else. Ask permission to take a day off. ASK for more money, because they sure as hell weren’t going to just give it to me.
Why did I start my own business?
From the moment I stepped into the workforce, I dreamed of more than just a job—I envisioned a career that would allow me to shape my own destiny. The allure of entrepreneurship wasn’t just about escaping the 9-to-5 grind but about embracing a life where creativity, financial independence, and personal fulfillment intersected. Here are the reasons why I took the leap to start my own business and become my own boss.
Freedom to Create and Innovate
You know that feeling when inspiration strikes and you just want to run with it? That’s what drove me to start my own business. I craved the freedom to innovate without constraints, to design websites that reflected personalities rather than templates, and to craft marketing strategies that felt more like storytelling than sales pitches.
Financial Independence
Beyond just paying bills, I wanted a career where hard work directly translated into financial security and prosperity. Being my own boss meant having control over my financial destiny—where every effort I put in would directly impact my earnings and future.
Flexible Schedule, Hello Sweatpants!
Picture this: no more rush-hour commutes or rigid 9-to-5 schedules. Being my own boss meant setting my own hours and working when inspiration struck, whether it was midweek fishing trips or late-night brainstorm sessions in my favorite pair of sweatpants.
Personal Fulfillment
Work that feeds the soul—now, that’s the dream. I wanted a career that left me energized, not drained, at the end of the day. Whether it was creating content that sparked conversations or projects that challenged and inspired me, personal fulfillment was my ultimate goal.
Control Over My Destiny
No more waiting for approvals or navigating office politics. Being my own boss meant taking the reins and making decisions based on my vision and values. It’s about charting my own course and shaping my career according to my aspirations and dreams.
Lifestyle Design
Beyond work-life balance, I sought work-life harmony. Being my own boss allowed me to prioritize family time, pursue hobbies, and design a lifestyle where work complemented life rather than overshadowed it.
I have been financially successful
Over the course of 30+ years, I have owned several companies. I am blessed to say that every single one of them has been successful, turned a profit, and enabled me to continue my quest for entrepreneurial independence.
A few of my companies:
- Web Design and Online Marketing Corporation
- Cient-side Automobile Purchase Consultant
- Environmentally Friendly Cleaning Company
- Mattress Cleaning and Disinfecting
- Wholesale Pallet Liquidation
- Affiliate Marketing
- Social Media Influencer
I have been blessed with making millions of dollars in my career, and I am so humbled. I do not share this with you to impress you, but rather to impress upon you how amazing being your own boss can be, and how flexible you should be in the process.
Personal and Professional Challenges Faced Along the Way and How I Overcame Them
Embarking on the journey of entrepreneurship wasn’t without its share of hurdles. From financial uncertainties to the daily juggle of work-life balance, here are the challenges I faced and how I navigated through them.
Financial Rollercoaster
The unpredictability of income and managing cash flow tested my financial acumen. I learned to budget meticulously, plan for lean months, and diversify income streams to weather the ups and downs of entrepreneurship.
Work-Life Juggle
Balancing the demands of growing a business with personal life was a delicate dance. I had to establish clear boundaries, prioritize self-care, and learn to delegate effectively to maintain productivity without sacrificing well-being.
Motivation Mastery
Staying motivated without the structure of a traditional workplace was a challenge. Setting clear goals, celebrating small wins, and seeking inspiration from mentors and peers helped me stay focused and driven.
Skill Stumble
Mastering new skills—from digital marketing to financial management—required dedication and a willingness to learn from setbacks. Embracing online courses, mentorship, and continuous self-improvement became my strategy for growth.
Lonely at the Top
Entrepreneurship can be isolating. Building a support network of fellow entrepreneurs, joining business communities, and seeking mentorship helped me overcome feelings of loneliness and gain valuable insights and encouragement.
The Blessings of Being Your Own Boss
The journey of entrepreneurship is filled with challenges, but the rewards are equally abundant. Here are the blessings I’ve discovered in being my own boss.
Freedom Feels
Waking up without an alarm clock and choosing my work attire (hello, sweatpants!) are small pleasures that come with being your own boss. The freedom to set your own schedule and work from anywhere is liberating.
Flexibility Frenzy
Work-life integration is a reality when you’re in charge. Whether it’s taking a midday yoga break or working from a cozy café, the flexibility of entrepreneurship allows you to blend work with life seamlessly.
Creative Playground
As an entrepreneur, creativity isn’t just encouraged—it’s essential. The ability to innovate, experiment, and bring ideas to life without bureaucratic red tape is one of the most rewarding aspects of being your own boss.
Financial Fruits
Unlike traditional employment where income is capped, being your own boss means your earning potential is limitless. The ability to directly reap the rewards of your hard work and entrepreneurship is empowering.
Job Security
As the architect of your career, you’re not at the mercy of layoffs or corporate restructuring. The security of knowing that your fate lies in your hands provides peace of mind and confidence in your future.
Work-Life Symphony
Achieving work-life balance isn’t just a goal—it’s a lifestyle. Being your own boss means setting boundaries that prioritize personal well-being, family time, and pursuing passions outside of work.
Personal Growth
Entrepreneurship is a journey of continuous learning and growth. From mastering new skills to overcoming challenges, the experience of being your own boss fosters personal development and resilience.
Legacy Building
Beyond financial success, entrepreneurship allows you to create a lasting impact. Whether it’s building a business that serves your community or leaving a legacy in your industry, being your own boss enables you to leave a meaningful mark.
